Mae Ploy Thai Yellow Curry Paste – awesome for a ‘less spicy’ Thai curry

If you love Thai curry dishes and would like to make your own but aren’t sure you can manage something spicy hot, which let’s face it most Thai curries are, you might want to buy a container of Mae Ploy Thai Yellow Curry Paste.

I don’t cook hardly at all here in Thailand, as everything is easy and cheap to buy ready-made on the street, but if I ever make curry, I often use Mae Ploy Thai Yellow Curry Paste to season it. Here’s why I do, and why I think you’ll like it.

Why is Mae Ploy Thai Yellow Curry Paste so delicious?

It’s Veggie — One of the big reasons I still use it is it’s one of the few ready-made Thai curry paste I’ve found that is completely vegetarian, as most curry pastes in Thailand include shrimp paste in their base. Now, I’m one of those on-again off-again vegetarians, unfortunately, but when I am feeling particularly ‘veggie’, this Thai yellow curry paste is the perfect one to cook with.

Perfect for Shrimp and Chicken — I’ve used Mae Ploy Thai Yellow Curry Paste with both shrimp and chicken, and it’s lovely with both. I particularly love it with any Thai curry dish that has potatoes in it. There’s something so comforting about the blend of mildly spicy curry powder, coconut milk and potatoes. Yum.

Mae Ploy is popular in Thailand — When I first moved to Thailand and asked a Thai friend to go with me to the supermarket to show me the brands of food she usually used, one of the items she picked off the shelf was Mae Ploy. She told me she, her sisters and her mother always use Mae Ploy products and, as they are some of the best-selling curry powders in Thailand, I’m guessing most other Thais do as well. I’ve used them ever since.

Mae Ploy brand is inexpensive — Where some other Thai curry powders are quite a bit more expensive, because the Mae Ploy brand is used by so many Thais it’s cheap.

Even if you buy Mae Ploy Thai Yellow Curry Paste on EBay, when you compare it to the cost of most other Thai curry pastes selling there, it’s incredibly cheap. Currently only $5.48 for a 14 oz tub, or just $8.99 for the 35 oz size and, if you order more than a certain number, you even get free shipping.

All in all, if you’re looking for an authentic Thai yellow curry paste, I have to say you really can’t go wrong with the Mae Ploy brand. I love it.

Where to eat Thai curries in Bangkok

By the way, if you’re in Bangkok and love Thai curries, I highly recommend eating at Somboon Pochana,  if you love curry crab as it’s their specialty and has been for more than 40 years.

Or, if you’d like a big selection of Thai curries to choose from, check out Curries & More by Baan Khannitha — one of the best curry restaurants in Thailand, if you ask me, and an incredibly beautiful restaurant to eat in.
