Khao Kha Moo – Thai Pork Neck With Rice and Egg

Khao Kha Moo at one of my local Bangkok food courts

There are certain foods in Thailand I can’t get enough of and “Khao kha moo” (stewed pork leg on rice) is one of the most delicious.

Pork leg is stewed for hours in a broth of soy sauce, sugar and spices, until the meat falls off the bone. It’s then served on a bed of jasmine rice with a side of kale, pickled mustard greens or morning glory and a stewed hard boiled egg, and the broth is then poured over all. Eat it with a side of som tam (spicy papaya salad) and it is, quite literally, the world’s best meal.

Eat it with a plate of spicy Som Tam - yum, yum.

I had lunch with one of my Thai friends last week at a food court down the street from my apartment. What you see on the table (two plates of pork leg with rice, a plate of som tam, a coke and a lemonade) was a total cost of 115 baht ($3.56 or $1.78 each). Not bad for a nice lunch with a friend and, yes, it was extremely tasty.
