The Eastern & Oriental Express is a luxury train that runs from Singapore to Bangkok, Thailand and back. Starting at Singapore’s Woodland Railway station in the early morning the train carries 137 passengers and travels through Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand to reach the Hua Lamphong train station in Thailand’s capital city, Bangkok three days and two nights later.
The return journey to Singapore is four nights and three days due to the later evening departure time.
To say the Eastern & Oriental Express is a luxury train is a bit of an understatement. The Pullman cars for the Eastern & Oriental Express were renovated with a $16 million facelift back in 1996 so, if you’re looking to travel in true luxury style from Singapore to Bangkok, taking this train will definitely please.
Each Pullman car was upholstered with gorgeous fabrics, rich wood paneling, and beautiful decorated fixtures. The design of each of the Eastern & Oriental Express cars is based on the classic movie “Shanghai Express” starring Marlene Dietrich, and is truly beautiful.
Taking the luxury Eastern & Oriental Express from Singapore to Bangkok, of course, is a once-in-a-lifetime trip. So much so that many people who do take the train are on their honeymoons or celebrating something special like a Silver or Golden wedding anniversary.
With prices for the Singapore to Bangkok leg starting at $2,560 per person for the Pullman Superior cabin and going up to $5,410 for the Presidential Suite, it’s not surprising most people only do this trip once.
The cost of the trip, however, does include all meals and tea and coffee as well as two guided tours — one of the lovely town of Penang, Malaysia and the other around the River Kwai and Kanchanaburi area of Thailand.
