The Vespa Scooter: Popular in Thailand (Video)

You may not think you’d see a lot of Vespa scooters in Thailand, but they are absolutely everywhere. 2012 was, in fact, Vespa’s 65th anniversary in Thailand so, as you can imagine, there are a lot of these scooters around both in the brand new, classic and completely reconditioned categories.

So popular are they, that when Vespa owners parked their scooters outside Bangkok’s City Hall at the beginning of the year to celebrate the 65th anniversary, more than 1,000 people showed up just to look.

Vespas are very popular at local Bangkok markets like Talad Lot Fai (Railway Market), where afficianados bring their Vespas to the night market to show them off to other like-minded Vespa lovers.  It’s fun to go and just wander around admiring how pretty they are.

The photo on this page of the green Vespa was taken by me at the beginning of the year in one of the small sois at Bangkok’s massive Chatuchak Weekend Market. I’ve seen a fair number of them here too, so obviously quite a few of the store owners or stall sellers ride them to work.

If I have my way, I’ll be the proud owner of a Vespa scooter in Bangkok next year. I absolutely love them.
