With many Thais still panicking about the latest cases of Covid-19 in Thailand, and a sizable percentage blaming ‘foreigners’ for them, Deputy PM Wissanu Krea-ngam has put that rumor to rest today.

During comments this morning about there not currently being a need for a new national lockdown, the Deputy PM also stated foreigners were not responsible for the new Covid-19 infections in Thailand.

In fact, he said, the new wave of infections were due to Thais sneaking across borders into neighboring countries, and then bringing the virus back with them when they returned to Thailand.

Of course, this will probably not stop xenophobic Thais from blaming foreigners as, sadly, there is a sizeable number of people in Thailand who prefer to think of ‘foreigners’ as the cause of many of the country’s problems.

The reality, however, is that most foreigners currently entering Thailand do so via legal channels. They are then required to complete a 14-day quarantine in a government-certified hotel before they are allowed into the general population.

So no, as it does bear repeating, according to the Thai government, foreigners are not responsible for the new Covid-19 infections in Thailand.
