TV shows a nationality watches can tell you a lot about a country
I always think it is interesting to see the type of TV shows different countries watch, as they can tell you quite a lot about the people in that country.
That is why I always enjoy seeing the new list streaming service Netflix publishes of Thailand’s top 10 most-watched TV shows on Netflix every week.
The list is updated early in the week, and gives you statistics for the most popular TV shows in Thailand for the previous week.
In the latest list’s instance, Thailand’s Top 10 most-watched TV shows on Netflix for the week of September 18th to the 24th and, as you might expect, TV shows that in some instances are quite different than people are currently watching in Europe or North America.
Let’s take a look and you will see.
What are Thailand’s top 10 most-watched TV shows on Netflix for the week of September 18th to the 24th?
Not only does the #2 show on Netflix in Thailand — Sex Education, Season 4 — not surprise me, as it is one of the Top 3 most-watched TV shows in almost every country in the world at the moment, none of the rest of the Top 1o do either.
They are:
- One Piece, Season 1 — (American/British/Japanese/South African)
- Sex Education, Season 4 — (UK)
- 6ixtynin9, The Series — (Thai)
- The Bride of Naga — (Thai)
- Destined with You — (Korean)
- Jujutsu Kaisen — (Japanese)
- A Time Called You — (Korean)
- Song of the Bandits — (Korean)
- The Cheery Lee, Village Headman — (Thai)
- Miraculous Brothers — (Korean)
More than many other countries, Thailand usually watches many of its own TV shows (good for Thais, as at least they are supporting their own country’s entertainment industry) and, if not Thai, Korean dramas and Japanese anime are also very popular in Thailand.
Thais also generally watch fewer American TV shows than Europeans, or North Americans.
Not always, but generally, as they seem to have an afinity with shows from other Asian countries than those from the U.S.
Looking at the list of Top 10 most-watched TV shows in Thailand for last week then, none of the series that are the most popular surprise me as the list has 1 American/British/Japanese/South African series, 1 British, 3 Thai series, 4 Korean dramas and 1 Japanese anime series.
A nice mix, and one I would expect knowing that Thais, even older adults love anime, and that Korean dramas are huge all over Asia including Thailand.
