One of my readers emailed me to ask if I’d ever been to Khao Luang Caves in Petchburi, Thailand and, if so, did I recommend it. Dudes, of course I do. Thailand’s caves are always amazing but the Khao Luang Caves are awesome.
Khao Luang Caves, just in case you don’t know, are a series of three massive caves that have Buddha statues and pagodas in them, so they’re a huge must-visit place for many Thai Buddhists. What makes Khao Luang Caves even more interpesting though, and a big draw for Thai Buddhists, is the Buddha statues and pagodas were actually put in by King Mongut (King Rama IV), who used to use the caves as a place to meditate before he became king. How cool is that?
If you’re thinking of visiting the caves, they’re not actually that far from Bangkok so very easy to get to — even for tourists. Petchaburi is about two hours south from Bangkok and driving is easy. Petchaburi can be gotten to by bus or by taxi or, of course, by the cars of any Thai friends you might know and, once there, it’s quite an interesting town to look around even after you’ve seen the caves.
