Whether you’re buying a gift to celebrate Thailand’s Mother’s Day on August 12, or a gift for your mom for Mother’s Day in the US or Europe, you’ll find beautiful gifts any mom will adore in Bangkok. With so much choice, and so many places to shop, it pays to know the best stores for Mother’s Day gifts in Bangkok. At these Bangkok stores, you’ll find high-quality, unique gifts, a vast variety of choices and all at prices substantially lower than in the west.
Jim Thompson – One of the best places for Mother’s Day gifts in Bangkok is Jim Thompson. Famous for its Thai silk products, Jim Thompson sells silk scarves, shirts, jackets, bags, make-up bags, glasses cases, jewelry boxes, hand-painted silk shirts and shawls, pillow cases, photo frames and much more. The store is known for its unique designs and is popular for Mother’s Day gifts due to its constantly changing stock and the superb quality of everything they sell.
Prices begin at $10-15 for small make up cases and t shirts all the way up to several hundred dollars for hand-painted items, silk clothing and bags. There are several Jim Thompson silk showrooms, with the largest on the ground floor of Central World Plaza in Bangkok. Get there by taking the sky train to Chidlom station and walking to Central World on the sky bridge.
Naraya – Naraya is another Thai favorite for Mother’s Day gifts. Selling similar types of things to Jim Thompson (bags, photo frames, fabric-covered jewelry boxes, make-up bags, glasses cases, wallets etc) but, where Jim Thompson’s products are made from Thai silk, most of Naraya’s products are made from Naraya-designed cotton fabric in many designs and colors.
Everything the store sells is high-quality, with lovely designs in everything from traditional to completely modern. Everything you buy your mom at Naraya will last a long time as the quality really is wonderful.
Naraya has several branches around Bangkok, with the most well know at Central Ladprao mall and Central World Plaza. To get to Central Ladprao, take the underground to Pahonyothin station and follow the crowds.
Paragon Passage – There’s a large lesser-known shopping area in the upscale Siam Paragon shopping mall called Paragon Passage. Located on the fourth floor and hidden in the back a little way, Paragon Passage is a huge store that sells high-end Thai handicrafts and artwork you won’t find anywhere else in Bangkok but with prices inexpensive compared to the west.
Here you’ll find celadon pottery, hand-carved vases, hand-made and hand-painted jewelry, silk scarves, shawls and clothing, hill tribe handicrafts, tea and coffee sets, fabric flowers and thousands of other beautiful gifts. Any mother would love just about anything from Paragon Passage. Plus, right outside the main shop you’ll also find small art galleries, antique stores, fabric stores, handicraft shops, selling even more gorgeous things. To get to Paragon Passage, take the sky train to Siam station and you’ll see Siam Paragon mall right next to the station.
With Bangkok being a shopper’s paradise, buying a gift for Mother’s Day can be difficult. With these four places though, you’re bound to find not one thing your mother would love but thousands. And, when you buy it, they’ll wrap it in lovely Thai handmade paper and surround it with pretty ribbon and a bow. Perfect to hand to your mom on Mother’s Day.
