Best Restaurants in the Sukhumvit Area of Bangkok, Thailand

Eating at Coffee Beans by Dao is sure to bring a smile to your face

Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok, Thailand runs through most of the city and then on all the way to Trat in southern Thailand. More than 400 kilometers long, the section that runs through Bangkok is one of the most popular places in the city to eat, drink and shop. With thousands of restaurants on Sukhumvit Road, for visitors to Bangkok, it can be difficult to choose where to eat. As a long-time resident of Bangkok, I’ve eaten at hundreds of them and recommend these. Known by visitors and Thais as not only some of the best restaurants on Sukhumvit, but also the best in the city, you’ll love them.

Crepes and Company – I’ve written about this restaurant so many times but, in seven years of living in Bangkok, it’s still my favorite and it never disappoints. Crepes and Company is located in a converted traditional Thai house, with hardwood floors, beautiful fixtures, subdued lighting and, oh by the way, don’t miss the bathrooms – cute, trendy and exotic in design.

Concentrating on Mediterranean dishes, Crepes and Company has what seems like hundreds of crepe choices, both savory and sweet, that will satisfy any taste. Don’t miss the soups, salads, pastas and vegetarian options either and, of course, the delicious desserts. Crepes and Company also has a beautiful garden, if you don’t like sitting inside, with tables surrounded by lush, exotic foliage and flowers.

On the weekends, make sure you reserve a table as Crepes and Company is very busy.

Coffee Beans by Dao – In my top five restaurants in Bangkok, Coffee Beans by Dao serves a mix of international and Thai food. Popular all the time, Coffee Beans by Dao is particularly famous for its cakes and desserts with Thais coming from miles around to buy them.

If you’re eating at the restaurant, don’t miss the burritos (huge!) or tacos, grilled pork or one of the spicy curries. Spaghetti and pasta dishes too are excellent and with prices around 200 to 300 baht per entree ($5.50 to $8.75) they’re reasonably priced.

Don’t forget the desserts too – the restaurant has large showcases stuffed full of the most incredible cakes, cheesecakes, souffles – and at less than 100 baht per slice ($3), you can afford two. There are several Coffee Beans by Dao in Bangkok. I normally frequent the one in Central Chidlom mall, but the Sukhumvit location is one of the largest. It also has indoor and outdoor seating, with two storeys inside, so there’s plenty of room.

Manchester United – Come on, you have to love a restaurant that’s based on the most popular football team in Thailand. Thais love Manchester United and so flock to the restaurant to not only enjoy the excellent food but also to watch the team’s games on TV. Decorated in bright red (of course!), Manchester United serves Thai, Asian and western food (some American, some British). Try the chicken quesadillas, palma ham with melon, the lamb shank or the lobster bisque.

The food is excellent and, with plenty of choices, there’s something for everyone in your party. The restaurant also has Manchester United memorabilia – shirts, posters, signed photos etc – all over the walls, so there’s something to enjoy while you eat. A bright, fun and friendly restaurant, Manchester United is a great Sukhumvit area restaurant to eat in.

The Sukhumvit area of Bangkok has literally thousands of restaurants and many of them are excellent. These three are my favorite restaurants in the area, so try these first. Then branch out and eat at the rest. With 99% of them, you really can’t go wrong.
