Green tea products are popular all over Asia and, in Bangkok, Thailand they’re a famous item at many shops, cafes and restaurants. Green tea items vary from the normal hot green tea and iced green tea drinks to green tea cake, green tea cookies and green tea ice cream. You can even buy green tea soaps, shampoos and body lotions. With so many restaurants, cafes and shops selling green tea products, it’s hard to decide where to go. For Bangkokians though, there are just some place better than others regardless of the cost.
In and Out – In and Out is part of the Japanese Oishi company and is a bakery with branches in many malls in Bangkok (the one at Central Ladprao is my favorite). In and Out is not only a wonderful place to get ahot green tea, an iced green tea or a green tea shake, you can also get any number of green tea baked goods. Try the green tea cake, the green tea cookies or even the green tea mochi (Japanese chewy rice flour desserts). In and Out also has sales on all its baked goods after 8pm. So, if you want to grab a few things to take home, then is the time to do so.
Chaho at Central World – Chaho is famous in Bangok for its green tea drinks and green tea based foods. Chaho is a small cafe on the fourth floor mezzanine at Central World Plaza, Bangkok’s largest and very upscale mall. Prices at Chaho are high (a good 50 baht ($1.30) higher than most other cafes for most items, but their products are delicious. Green tea smoothies are a favorite here as well as green tea cake, green tea mochis and, of course, green tea ice cream.
And, if you really love green tea ice cream, splurge on the green tea sundae complete with whipped cream and a cherry. Yum. Chaho also sells packs of its own brand green tea if you want to brew some at home. Central World Plaza is at the Chidlom sky train station stop.
Dream of Cakes – A Thai friend turned me onto this bakery and, boy, am I glad she did. Dream of Cakes is a cake bakery that delivers cakes to your home. Pricey by Bangkok standards (average per cake is 1,200 baht ($35) the cakes are so worth it, who cares about the cost. The bakery has lots of scrumptious cakes but you have to try the Nigata Green Tea Cake – it’s unbelievable. It’s a 2-pound cake, perfect for at least 4-6 people, and can be delivered anywhere in the Bangkok area for free. Wonderful if you’re celebrating a birthday or know someone who is.
You can order the green tea cake, or any other gorgeous cake, from Dream of Cakes website or by calling them at 089-770-462.
Iberry – For the best green tea ice cream in Bangkok, you can’t beat Iberry. Iberry is a local brand of homemade Thai ice cream, with cafes all over Bangkok. They have more than 100 flavors of ice cream, but favorites include the green tea, the chocolate and green tea, and the red bean and green tea ice creams. They also create wonderful matcha green tea shakes and iced green tea. Don’t miss trying a slice of the green tea roll too. Iberry has almost 20 locations in Bangkok, with more opening every year. Try the one at Siam Paragon (in the basement) at Major Avenue or at Siam Square.
