Dried fish being sold on the roadside is a common sight in Bangkok. They’re usually displayed on top of round baskets made from bamboo and are carried from place to place suspended from the shoulders of a Thai seller using a traditional bamboo pole
Thais love fish in any shape or form. Fried fish, boiled fish, braised fish, sliced fish, chopped fish, fish soup, fish curry, dried fish snacks – you name it, they eat it.
These headless fish displayed for sale in baskets are often used by Thais to make nam prik, a famous Thai spicy condiment, or sometimes just eaten as a snack. They’re actually delicious but, the most fascinating thing to me is how truly beautiful dried fish in Thailand can look, just laying by the side of a busy road.
